Ya’ll know I need good music in order to run. What is good music? Music I like. Duh. I’m always scouring iTunes, YouTube, Bandcamp, and Sirius/XM for new music to add to my running mix.
Spring is finally (maybe?) here in New England, and it’s time to start increasing my mileage outside. Goodbye, fleece; hello, singlets. Lace up your shoes and join me!
The bad thing about running gear is that it wears out or gets so funky that even the landfill is like, “Hard pass.” But the good thing about running gear is that when it does wear out, you can do some guilt-free shopping. My must-haves for Spring 2017:
Brooks Capris: These bright capris have a wide waist band, which keep my fat roll (aka baby donut) from plunging over. $75 at Brooks
Slay then Rosé tank: Let’s be real. One of the reasons I run is for stress relief. The other is so I can imbibe without guilt. $19.99 at Etsy
On Cloudflyer: I’m in love with this shoe, which I bought after struggling with knee pain for most of 2016. It’s a light shoe (with mint accents!) that offers stability for long-distance running. I’ve been loyal to the Brooks Dyad for over 10 years, but I am now an On convert. $159 at Zappos
I’m jealous, I’m overzealous
When I’m down, I get real down
When I’m high, I don’t come down
I get angry, baby, believe me
I could love you just like that
And I could leave you just this fast
The Cure-cum-New Order in tone. The 43 year-old in me smiles. Plus it’s called RAN. What do more do you want for your running mix?
On these roads
Out of love, so it goes
How it feels when we fall, when we fold
How we lose control, on these roads
How it sings as it goes
Flight of field, driving snow
Knows the cold
If you get up in the hillside
If you ride out on the planes
If you go digging up dirt
If you go out dancing in the rain
If you go chasing in rainbows
Just to find the gold end there
Darling just look behind you
Oh, I’ll go with you anywhere
I’m so fuckin’ sick and tired of the photoshop
Show me something natural like afro on richard pryor
Show me something natural like ass with some stretchmarks
Still will take you down right on your momma’s couch in polo socks aye
This song is the modern take on that Bob Dylan song, “It’s Ain’t Me, Babe”.
Fine, here is the Bob Dylan song in the version I prefer. Apologies to Beth for liking Reese in this instance.
We don’t have Prince anymore, but thank God we have Little Dragon.
Not gonna lie. I first checked Shura’s electronic music because for me, it all goes back to The Bronze Horseman. If you like CHVRCHES, you will like Shura.
Every running mix needs a cool down. I am so ashamed at how much I love this song. Itevokes the overwrought Air Supply genre that was my jam in middle school. #TeamHarry
