I don’t just connect with her plight, kind of root for her, but also kind of despise her so that I’m ok with it when she inevitably fails or when bad things happen to her. No, instead Selina’s so perfectly awful that sometimes I want to BE her. Fails and all.
Julia won her 7th acting Emmy Sunday night, and her 5th CONSECUTIVE Lead Actress one for VEEP. Despite the feeling that other comedy actresses are being overlooked, this season nothing could be more deserved than her turn as President Meyer.
And I just want to celebrate a few of the times she was my fave.
Five Times Selina Meyer Was My Favorite
When She was Mom Goals
Selina is a terrible mother. The pathological narcissist who completely ignores her only child might be the worst kind of mother, in fact. But I loved this scene. The only thing a child needs to know when they get their heart broken is that all along their mother hated the person they loved.
When She Ages the Right Way
Hate it? Change it. Don’t let dicks make jokes about it. This episode when Selina got her eyes done was perfect. Being a woman is hard. Aging is hard. Being a woman in the public eye while aging HAS to be the hardest. Selina is perfect at balancing what she wants for herself with taking no misogynistic BS about it while also wanting the men she’s interested in to notice she looks good. She is every one of us.
When She’s the Meanest
You might think she’s Regina George, but she’s Janis Ian. Selina can hit the girls who think they’ve won right where it hurts. She’s SO horrible in this scene that I gasped, and then applauded. I want to be able to do this.
When She Hated Country Music
… like Americans should.
When She Is Perfect Under Pressure
I’m gonna go on record that this scene got Julia the Emmy this year because I’ve never seen anything so hilariously poised and vile at the same time.
Congrats on your Emmy win, Julia! I’m going to continue to hope to never be and to always be just like Selina Meyer.
