It’s a show about the British Royal Family
But it’s TOTALLY made for Americans. Think about all the things we really think (or hope) about The Royals (in-fighting, sexual deviants (I’m looking at your Liz), drugs, and a whole rock and roll life style behind that tight-lipped look) and that is what we see on this show. The show opens after the oldest Prince, and future King, is killed. The family left grieving is England’s beloved King Simon, his evil brother Cyrus, the bitchy Queen Helena and the twin prince and princess Eleanor and Liam. Eleanor is a coke-head; The Queen is having an affair; The King is just lovely and The Prince wants to be normal, so starts to date the American daughter of the King’s head of security (of course).
Elizabeth Hurley is so bad
She plays Queen Helena and she is SO bad and not-likeable. Has she always been a terrible actress? Is it a Schtick? There is this bit she does (and her daughter) where they say/tweet/text “F-M-L” and SAY it out loud (FML for the uninitiated is “F*ck my life”) So if something dramatic happens she literally says OUT LOUD “F-M-L” Ugh it’s so bad.
Prince Liam is amazing
He’s just So likable. He’s sweet, He’s down to earth, He never expected to have to fill his older brother’s shoes. His brother was the beloved one. He just wants to be a normal guy. He just wants to like this cute American girl, Ophelia.
Things don’t go as planned. OBVIOUSLY
Then there was Jasper
Enter hot relationship of Princess Eleanor’s#1- Jasper the security guard. They have a thing. It gets dramatic. You see him shirtless and in bed. He ruins it. Or maybe she does. But it never ends. It’s the glue of the show. Or is it? Just wait for Season 2 guys.

For a girl with overdone eyeliner and a cocaine habit, Eleanor sure attracts great guys. This is Beck:

You’re welcome. We like Beck. Behind those abs is a great guy. He really loves Eleanor. And she doesn’t really deserve it.
The Royals is like Gossip Girl but so much worse. While the Gossip Girl had over-the-top dramatic storylines, they were at least good. The Royals has over-the-top dramatic storylines that aren’t good at all. Yet there are likable characters like Prince Liam and the Ophelia the American and poor Princess Eleanor who makes ALL the wrong choices but you have sympathy for her anyway.
