The post binge-watching haze of the new Marco Polo series on Netflix is intense. Not so often does one series combine mega battles, kung-fu, lots of boobs, history, and a hot star with a fantastic accent. It overloads your senses and you may not be quite sure what you just watched (all the while you have been singing “I’ll make a man out of you” from Mulan), but you enjoyed it — and that is what matters most. Sure, it is a bit ridiculous but the main star is a gem of a find from Italy.
Meet Lorzeno Richelmy, an Italian actor that went through weeks of training and English lessons for this role. I would have never guessed that he just learned English (which probably means that he told it throughout school and probably spoke it pretty well, but had to work out his accent so people could truly understand him — it worked.) He’s only 24, which makes me feel like a slight creeper, but hey, he does pass the half your age plus 7 rule…barely. The long hair and puppy dog eyes is our entry way into the very foreign culture of the Mongol dynasty. Sure, this is a largely fictionalize account based loosely on the truth about Marco Polo’s time in China, but it makes for entertaining TV, I promise.

While all shows are on hiatus and your family has Antique Roadshow on repeat, grab your cell, tablet or computer and start watching this kung-fu, hearthrob Italian win you over with his charm. Plus, the supporting cast does a great job too. Need to get your BF/Husband buy in? Just mention bewbs and kung-fu…sometimes together. Need your GF on board? Just show her a picture of Lorenzo and mention an Italian accent. Easy peasy.
Please attempt to watch this series now without humming along to that amazing training montage, I dare you.
What do you think of Marco Polo? Are you into kung-fu? How will I make a man out of you?
