I have never been religious and my reading of the bible starts and stops with Genesis. Therefore I rely on fictional tellings of bible stories for my understanding — that and TN’s own Bekah who gives me the highlights of the apocalypse and sometimes calls the big man downstairs, Santa (probably by mistake). So when I found out that one of my favorite fictional bible story books of 10 years ago, was being turned into a mini-series, I was super psyched.
However, 10 years was a long time ago, and although I thought at the time that I was a good reader — 5 books a year — my current reading level has made sure that I barely remember the story of The Red Tent beyond a few plot points.
Biblical times were all about Big Love
Jacob married Leah and some other women, Dinah was born and raised by a herem of women. This entire concept continues to blow my mind because i’m sure jealousy was an emotion thousands of years ago.
Men Couldn’t Handle Periods Then or Now
Women were relegated to the red tent when it was their time of month and just like overnight camp, everyone’s flow starts to sync. No idea why the men would want to separate the ladies during this time…
Snipping adult men was something people did
You want to marry someone’s daughter? Well, it best be snipped… This was apparently a big deal that I slightly remember from the book.
Saved by a Technicolor Dreamcoat
Dinah’s brother is Joseph and I’m fairly sure they broke into musical numbers when trying to escape captivity. So look out for Red Tent the musical.
The Red Tent Mini series premieres December 7th at 9pm. Will you be watching? Have you read the book?
